The Whiskey Gentry – New Music and Interview
Following the release of their first two albums, Please Make Welcome (2011) and Holly Grove (2013), the Atlanta-based band The Whiskey Gentry are set to release their third full-length studio album titled Dead Ringer in the Spring of 2017. The band released the music video for the song “Following You” on January 18th, 2017. The band is the husband and wife duo Lauren Staley & Jason Morrow and bandmates. Dead Ringer deals with growing up, how that’s affected the band’s relationships, and the places they’ve gone and people they’ve met in the process. As singer/songwriter Lauren Staley puts it, “There’s also a lot of questioning where you are in your life: are you going to follow your dream, or are you going to do what society thinks you should do?”
Interview with Lauren Staley:
What was the inspiration for the album title ‘Dead Ringer’?
“The title Dead Ringer comes from the title track of the album. I wrote the song about turning 30 and trying to decide if I was on the correct life path. I feel like there’s a lot of pressure on women to have their lives all figured out by that time, and I’m out here traveling in a band trying to make a dream a reality. Ha! The struggle of constantly questioning of yourself and your life decisions while chasing your passion is the focus of a lot of the songs on this new record, so it seemed like a good, catchy fit for the title.”
“We recorded this record at Echo Mountain Recording Studio in Asheville, North Carolina in winter 2015/2016. This is our first record working with a producer, Les Hall. I think you can definitely hear his influence on the songs and the vibe. He pushed us to think outside of our box and our comfort zone, and I’m very pleased with where that took us.”
Where have you been performing and where can people see you in 2017?
“We took the majority of 2016 of the road to focus on completing this record, so it’s go time for touring in 2017! We will be all over the US and possibly Europe later this year. I would say just keep checking the website and social media sites, because it’s changing and updating constantly.”
What would you like to have going on in the future?
“Ideally, we’d like to see this record do well for us and create bigger opportunities for the band. We’ve seen a lot of progress in the eight years we’ve been doing this, so we’d just love to keep that momentum going and shoot for the moon!”
What personal or special interests do you have in terms of hobbies or community?
“Jason and I are married and we have two golden retrievers named Jack and Sailor. We’re pretty obsessed with them, so you could say that’s a real special interest. I also crochet, and Jason just recently started painting…and he’s great at it! It really blows me away any time he does it.”
Are there any certain brands of instruments that band members prefer or enjoy currently?
“Jason loves his Three Monkeys amp – that company is so great and really supported musicians from all walks of live and success. He loves his Duesenberg guitar and his Fender Tele. I’ve been playing a Blueridge acoustic for almost a decade now, and it’s been a total work horse for me.”
